There are rumors flying around that Sony has plans of incorporating a new capability for the PlayStation3. If it would prosper, PS3 can function as a digital video recorder. Sony's PSP has its UMD and Memory Stick Duo storage capabilities, making it able to do more than play games. Meanwhile, Tivo has an upcoming support for Sony's PSP Media Manager. They are both ways to get video entertainment content on to the PSP's glorious screen from a variety of sources. Using the same technology, PS3 can indeed have
DVR capabilities.
DVR functionality is said to be one of Sony's top priority, together with making high def movie and TV episode available for downloads just like the
iTunes Music Store. There were no details on how the video is going to get into the system. But I think since that PS3 will likely not have a hard drive in all configurations, a DVR function might just be a secondary feature in the device. What can be clearly expected is a device similar to the Microsoft model. A centralized networked computer serves as the repository of content, and streaming media capabilities fill in the rest of the gaps. Rather than being a Tivo-type, a PS3 slash DVR may play content that is fed to it, but you'll need to do the feeding.
